Three big words that got dropped on you in a hospital room, or over the phone, or in a clinic, and then the doctor was talking about the next steps while your brain was still stuck on the first word. The Short Version (the one you can repeat to a family member)
Aspiration pneumonia happens when something that was supposed to go into your stomach — or through your mouth and nose — accidentally goes down into your lungs. That “something” is usually food, liquid, saliva, or sometimes stomach acids. When that material lands in your lungs, it can cause irritation, swelling, and eventually an infection. That
