Take a breath. If you're reading this, you've likely just heard the words "Arts syndrome" for the first time, and your head is probably spinning. You might be sitting in a doctor's office with a brochure that's written in a language that feels foreign, or you're at home googling things you wish you hadn't. Let's stop for a second. Put the phone down. Take another breath. You're going to be okay, and we're going to get through this together, one step at a time.

So what is Arts syndrome, really? At its simplest, it's a rare genetic condition that affects how your body produces energy and builds certain important molecules. That sounds big and scary, but let's break it down into tiny pieces.

First, you need to know that the condition is spelled with an "s" at the end of "Arts" but it has nothing to do with painting or music. It's named after the doctor who first described it, a man named Willem Arts. It's also sometimes called X-linked Arts syndrome, and that "X-linked" part is important — we'll get to that in the next chapter, but for now just know it tells us
