So you've just heard the words "ARC syndrome." Maybe a doctor said them to you in a small room with bad lighting. Maybe you read them in a chart, or a loved one told you over the phone. However you got here, you're scared, and that is completely, entirely, one hundred percent understandable. Let's take a breath together. You don't need to understand everything right now. You just need to understand what you're dealing with, and that is exactly what this chapter is for.

ARC syndrome is a mouthful, and it's a name that doesn't tell you anything useful on its own. It is not a "syndrome" in the vague, shrugging sense of the word, where doctors just say it because they don't know what else to call things. ARC stands for three specific things: Arthrogryposis, Renal dysfunction, and Cholestasis. Those are three big, scary words that don't mean anything yet. Let's break them down one by one, because each one is actually a description of what is happening in the body — not a judgment, not a sentence, just a set of facts you can work with.
