Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably been told, in a dozen different ways, that the secret to a better trip is more time. Take a sabbatical. Quit your job. Travel for a year. The advice is everywhere, and it has a seductive logic. The reason your vacation to Paris felt like a blur is because you only had seven days. The reason your long weekend in Rome left you exhausted is because you tried to see the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Trevi Fountain in 72 hours. The fix, we are told, is to simply add more days to the calendar.

This is wrong. Not just a little wrong, but fundamentally, structurally wrong. It is the wrong diagnosis, and it leads to a wrong treatment. If you gave every rushed traveler in the world an extra month of vacation tomorrow, nothing would actually change. They would not slow down. They would not go deeper.
