The Resume That Works in the Modern World

A structured, evidence-informed system for building a resume that gets real interviews - based on how hiring actually works today

by Alumigogo Books

Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably been told that a resume is a marketing document. That it is your personal brand. That it needs to tell a compelling story. Maybe you have been told that it should fit on one page, or two pages, or no pages at all. That it should use action verbs. That it should be chronological, or functional, or some combination.

You have tried these things. You have revised your resume. You have tailored it. You have followed the advice. And something is still wrong.

You submit applications and hear nothing. Not a rejection, not an interview, not even an automated confirmation that tells you anything useful. Your application enters a black hole, and after a few weeks of this, you start to wonder whether the problem is you.

It is not. The problem is that almost all common advice about resumes was written for a hiring world that no longer exists. The advice is not wrong because you are a bad candidate. It is wrong because it is outdated.

Here is the reality of how your resume is processed today. You submit it through an online portal. Before any human being sees it, software reads it. This software is called an applicant tracking system, or ATS. It parses your resume, extracts information from it, and stores it in a database. It then screens your resume against the job description.
