Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. If you have ever wondered what a UX Designer actually does all day, and whether you could possibly do it too, this book is for you. This is not a career seminar, it's not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it's definitely not a 400-page textbook. This is a ten-day starter plan. Ten days of showing up, doing a small amount of real work, and figuring out if this skill is something you want to keep learning. The stakes are low, the work is tangible, and your only job today is to get your hands dirty.

Before we do anything, let's clear up one thing. UX stands for User Experience. A UX Designer's job is to make a product, usually an app or a website, easier and more pleasant for a person to use. That's it. It's not about making things look pretty (that's a different job, called visual design). It's about paying close attention to how a person moves through a product, where they get confused, what frustrates them, and what makes them feel successful. If you've ever used an app and thought, "Why is this button in such a weird place?" or "Who made it this hard to find my order?" then you have already experienced a good or bad UX. Today, you are going to start thinking like the person who would fix that.
