Welcome. I'm glad you're here. If you've picked up this guide, you're probably curious about tap dancing, but also a little unsure what to expect. Maybe you've seen a routine on stage, or a video clip online, and something about the sound of shoes making their own music got stuck in your head. Maybe you're just looking for a new hobby that doesn't require a screen or a gym membership. Either way, this is a safe, practical place to start. No prior experience needed. No flexibility test. No rhythm requirement. Just you, your feet, a hard floor, and about fifteen minutes.

Let's talk about what day one is not. It is not a performance. It is not a workout in the intense sense. It is not a time to judge yourself. Day one is about two things: getting comfortable with the idea that your feet can be instruments, and getting to know one very basic movement. That's it. If you walk away from today's session knowing how to make a clear, controlled tap sound with the ball of your foot, you've done fantastic. That's the entire goal.

Before we get into the actual movement, let's talk about your setup. You don't need tap shoes today. You really don't. All you need is a pair of shoes with a firm, relatively flat sole—something like hard-soled dress shoes, work boots, or even a pair of sneakers with a tough, non-grippy bottom.
