Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome. If you're reading this, you're probably holding a book (or a screen) with a grid of 81 tiny squares on it, and it looks a little intimidating. That's okay. Everyone feels that way on day one. The good news is that this first session isn't about being clever. It's about getting your hands dirty and learning that this puzzle is far less scary than it looks.
Let's start with what you're actually looking at. A Sudoku grid is a 9x9 square, which means there are 9 rows and 9 columns. Inside that big grid, there are also 9 smaller 3x3 boxes, each one containing 9 cells. The goal is to fill every empty cell with a number from 1 to 9. But there are three simple rules: no number can repeat in a row, no number can repeat in a column, and no number can repeat in a 3x3 box. That's the entire game. You can't add numbers to get a sum, it's not a math test, and you won't need a calculator. You just need to find the logical place for each number.
For today, we're not going to try to solve a puzzle. That would be like trying to run a marathon on your first day of walking. Instead, we're going to do something much more useful: we're going to get comfortable with how the grid flows, and we're going to make two absolutely safe placements. That's it. Two numbers.
