First Day
Welcome to day one. You've decided to give speed reading a real, ten-day try, and that's genuinely the hardest part. Before we do anything else, let's set one expectation straight: you will not read at 1,000 words per minute today. You probably won't do it in ten days either. That's not because you're bad at this or because the method is broken — it's because speed reading is a physical skill, like learning to touch-type or ride a bike, and your brain and eyes need time to build the right habits. What you will get today is your first real session, a concrete number to measure your progress later, and a small, honest win to hold onto. That's a meaningful start.
Here's what today's session actually looks like. It's not a lecture — it's an experiment. You'll need four things: something to read that isn't too difficult (like a novel, a news article, or a blog post you've been meaning to read), a timer (your phone will work perfectly), a pen or a chopstick or even a knitting needle — anything slim you can hold in your hand — and a notebook or a blank document on your computer. If you don't have all of this, no problem. A kitchen timer and your finger for the pen will do just fine. The point is to have something to read and something to time yourself with. That's it.
