Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. You've picked up this guide because you're curious about sketching, and maybe a little nervous. That's good. That nerves is the same thing that makes a blank page feel like a dare. Let's sit with that for a second, because the first thing I want you to know is that sketching is not about talent. It's about training your hand and your eye to work together, and that is a skill anyone can build with practice.

Today is your very first session. By the end of it, you will have completed a real sketch of a simple object from your desk or kitchen. Not a masterpiece, but something you made with your own hand. That's the win for today: proving to yourself that you can do this, even if it doesn't look like anything yet.

Let's talk about what you need. Just one thing, actually, to start: a pencil and some paper. Go find any pencil you have lying around, or ask for one at work. A standard number 2 pencil is perfect. If you have a couple of different pencils, great, but you don't need them yet. For paper, grab a sheet of printer paper, the back of an envelope, or a blank page in a notebook. You don't need a special sketchbook for today's session - that comes later if you decide to stick with it.
