Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to day one. If you're reading this, you've probably been thinking about self-defense for a while - maybe you saw a news story, maybe a friend mentioned a class, or maybe you just walked past a martial arts gym and wondered what it would be like. Whatever brought you here, the first thing you need to know is this: you're about to do something real. Not watching a video, not reading about technique - actually standing up, moving your body, and learning something that could matter.

And right now, before you even start, I want to set your expectations. This is not about becoming a fighter in a day. It's not about learning to defeat a bigger, stronger opponent in a dramatic showdown. Today is about three things: getting a feel for what self-defense training actually is, moving your body in ways you probably haven't moved it in a while, and finishing with one small, concrete win that you can point to and say, "I did that."

Let me tell you what today's session is going to look like. It's short - about twenty to thirty minutes, and that includes reading this chapter. You don't need any equipment. You don't need a gym. You need a small space about the size of a yoga mat, maybe a little bigger, where you can move your arms freely and take a few steps in each direction.
