Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. If you are reading this, you have probably looked at the ocean and wondered what is underneath, or you have scrolled past a video of a sea turtle and felt a small pang of "I wish that was me." That curiosity is the only prerequisite you need for today. Day one is not about mastering anything. It is about getting your feet wet, literally and figuratively, and having a single, small, honest win that you can build on tomorrow.

Scuba diving, at its heart, is a very strange thing. It involves strapping a heavy metal tank to your back, putting a rubber mouthpiece in your mouth, and then voluntarily sinking below the surface of the water. Your brain, which has spent your entire life telling you that air comes from the surface, will initially protest. That protest is normal. You are not a coward for feeling it; you are a human being reacting to a novel situation. The goal of today is simply to form a clear, unpanicked idea of what this sensation is like.

Let’s walk through what your first session will realistically look like. You will likely be in a swimming pool, not the ocean. Pools are flat, warm, and have an obvious floor and a surface you can easily reach. You will be wearing a "BCD" (buoyancy control device), which is the inflatable jacket that the tank is strapped to.
