Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to the first day of your salsa experiment. You've bought this little guide, maybe after watching a video of a couple spinning each other around a dimly lit floor, or after saying "one day I'll learn to dance" for the third time this year. Well, today is that day. But I want to set expectations right now, before you read a single step: this is not going to look like the videos you've seen. Not today, not for a while. Today is about planting a seed, not winning a competition. We're going to do one small, concrete thing, and you're going to finish this session feeling like you accomplished something real, even if it's just a few minutes of movement.

First, let's talk about what you will be doing for the next twenty to thirty minutes. Find a spot in your living room or bedroom where you have enough space to take two or three steps in each direction without hitting a coffee table or tripping over a cat. If you have hardwood or tile, great. If you have carpet, that's fine too; it just means your feet will slide a little less, and you'll have to lift them ever so slightly higher. Clear an area roughly six feet by six feet. Move the chair, push the rug aside, close the door if you're self-conscious about your roommate or family hearing you stomp around. You don't need anything else today. No special shoes, no dance
