Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to day one. If you're reading this, you've probably never set foot on a sailboat, or maybe you've been near one but never actually gone out. That's exactly where you should be. Today isn't about learning the theory of sailing or memorizing the names of every rope on the boat. Today is about getting on the water, feeling what it's like to be in a small boat with the wind pushing you, and deciding if this is something you want to do again tomorrow.

Let's set the scene. You're going to do a short, simple session - no more than two hours. You're not learning to race, not learning to navigate, not even learning to sail in a straight line yet. You're going to get comfortable being on the water, learn the absolute basics of what a boat does when the wind hits it, and hopefully end the day with a smile on your face, not a knot in your stomach.

First, the practical stuff. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet. You will get wet at some point - maybe just from a splash, maybe more. Old sneakers or water shoes are fine; flip-flops are not. Bring a change of clothes and a towel in a plastic bag in the car. Sunscreen and a hat are non-negotiable, even if it's cloudy. Wind and water reflect sun in ways you don't expect.
