Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. I'm glad you're here. If you're reading this, you're probably at a point where you've decided that writing a resume is something you need to do, but you have no idea where to start. Maybe you're staring at a blank screen right now. Maybe you've been putting this off for weeks because it feels like a huge, scary project. Maybe you've even tried to start before, typed a few lines, and then closed the document because you didn't know what to say next.

That's all normal. Let's take a breath, and let's talk about what we're actually going to do today.

First, let's be honest about what a resume is. It's not a biography. It's not a life story. It's not even a record of everything you've ever done. A resume is a marketing document — a one- or two-page summary of your work history and skills, laid out in a way that makes it easy for a hiring manager to quickly see if you're a good fit for a specific job. That's it. Your resume's only job is to get you a conversation — an interview — where you can then tell your story in person. Today, we are not going to write your whole resume. That would be too much, and you'd get overwhelmed and quit. Today, we are going to do just one small piece: we are going to gather the raw material you'll need.

What does today's session actually look like?
