Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. This is your first day of trying public speaking, and I want to start by being honest with you about what that means: it's going to feel awkward, and that's fine. The point of today isn't to be good. The point is to get your feet wet enough to realize the water isn't actually freezing. So let's do exactly that.

First, find a space where you can be alone and uninterrupted for 20 minutes. That could be a bedroom, a kitchen, a garage, or even a parked car. Close the door if you can. This is your practice space for today and for the next nine days if you decide to continue. It doesn't need to be soundproof or have special lighting. It just needs to be a place where you can talk out loud without feeling like someone's listening.

Once you're in your space, I want you to do something that's going to feel strange: you're going to talk to an empty room for 30 seconds. That's it. Thirty seconds of you speaking out loud with no one else there. Before you think about what to say, I want you to just stand there for a moment and look at the room. That empty chair, that blank wall, that window. This is your audience for today. Not an auditorium, not a boardroom, not a wedding reception. Just a room.

Here's your assignment: pick a topic so small and so boring that you don't care
