Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. Let's get something out of the way before you feel the pressure: this is not about writing a masterpiece today. This is not about being "good" at art. This is about you, sitting down, and doing the one thing that separates people who write poetry from people who talk about writing poetry: you're going to put words on paper. Today. And you're going to let them be imperfect.

Before we even talk about poems, let's talk about where you're going to do this. You need a quiet-ish space and a writing tool. I'm serious about this being low-commitment, so here's the minimal bar: a piece of paper and a pen you like. Or a laptop, a tablet, or even your phone's notes app. The device doesn't matter nearly as much as the act, but there is one thing I want you to do if you can physically manage it: use something that isn't the same space where you doomscroll. If you're on your phone, go sit in an actual chair, not your bed. If you're at a computer, close every other tab. The point is to send a tiny signal to your brain that says "we are doing a different kind of thing now." That signal is the difference between thinking about writing and actually writing.
