Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You're here because you're curious about Pilates, not because you've already mastered it. Let's get that out of the way.
Pilates is a method of exercise that focuses on controlled movement, breath, and what practitioners call "the core" - that's the group of muscles in your trunk, including your abdominals, lower back, hips, and glutes. The founder, Joseph Pilates, called his method "Contrology" because it's about the way your mind controls your muscles. That sounds a little philosophical, but the practice itself is earthy and simple. You will spend a lot of time lying on the floor, moving your legs and arms slowly, and wondering why something that looks so easy feels so hard. That's normal.
What your first session actually looks like: You will lie down. You will breathe. You will move one limb at a time. You will probably laugh at yourself once or twice. And you'll finish in about ten minutes feeling like you've used some muscles you forgot you had.
Before we start, find a spot on your floor. You need enough room to lie flat with your arms stretched overhead and your legs extended - roughly the size of a single bed. If you have a yoga mat, use it. If you don't, a towel folded in half or a carpeted floor is fine. You also need comfortable clothing. Not workout gear necessarily, but something you can move in.
