Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. If you're reading this, you're curious about music notation — the system of dots, lines, and symbols that lets musicians write down sounds so they can be shared and played again later. Maybe you've seen a page of sheet music and felt a mix of intrigue and intimidation. Maybe you play an instrument by ear and want to finally understand what all those markings mean. Or maybe you just like the idea of being able to look at a score and hear it in your head. Whatever pulled you here, today is about one thing: getting your hands on the basics in a way that feels real, doable, and maybe even a little fun. There's no pressure to master anything. We're just going to start.

Here's what your first session will actually look like. Clear a small space — a kitchen table, a desk, even a clipboard on your lap. You'll need a piece of blank paper, a pencil (not a pen, because you'll want to erase), and about 30 to 45 quiet minutes. That's it. No instrument required, no app to download, no expensive gear. Just you, a pencil, and a willingness to make some marks that might look a little wobbly at first. That's completely normal. If you're the kind of person who likes to be good at things immediately, take a breath: today is not about being good. Today is about seeing what this feels like.

Let's start with the most basic
