Chapter 1: First Day

Day One: You're Not Riding Yet. You're Meeting the Bike.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about your first day on a motorcycle: you won't actually ride one. Not in the way you're imagining — no engine roar, no wind in your face, no leaning into turns. That's fine. Today is about getting comfortable with the weird, heavy, mechanical object that will become your partner if you keep going. It's a bit like the first day of a new job: you don't expect to be doing the big tasks yet. You're learning where the coffee machine is, who your coworkers are, and how to open the door without awkwardly pushing when you should have pulled.

Before we start, a small reality check. If you don't have access to a motorcycle, today's session is still possible to do — you just end a little earlier. Ideally, you'll borrow or rent a small-displacement bike, something in the 250cc to 500cc range (that's the engine size, and smaller means much easier to handle). If a friend has a dirt bike or a standard motorcycle, ask if they'd let you spend an hour with it in a flat, empty lot.
