Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. If you are reading this, you have been curious enough about mosaic art to actually open a guide about it - and that curiosity is the only prerequisite. You do not need artistic talent, a studio, or a single piece of fancy equipment. In fact, everything you need for today's first session is either already in your home or can be bought for less than a sandwich at lunch. By the end of this hour to ninety minutes, you will have cut your first tile, glued your first piece, and - this is the important part - discovered whether the act of breaking and reassembling actually feels good to you.
Before we get to the doing, let me tell you what a mosaic is in plain terms. A mosaic is a picture or pattern made by fitting small pieces of hard material together, with a small gap between them, and then filling those gaps with a substance called grout. That is it. The small pieces are called tesserae (singular: tessera). It sounds like an intellectual word, and yes, the ancient Romans used it, but it just means 'piece used in a mosaic.' Ninety percent of what you will learn in the next ten days is about two things: cutting tesserae into shapes and placing them where you want them. That is the whole game.
