Welcome. This is the day you actually sit down and try meditation for the first time. Not tomorrow, not when you've found the perfect app or a nice cushion, not when you've read a few more articles. Today. This chapter is going to walk you through exactly what that first session looks like, what you should expect to feel, and what you need to do to walk away at the end of the day with a small, honest win under your belt.

Before we get into the how, let's clear some air about what meditation is not. It's not turning off your brain. It's not achieving some blissful state where all your problems vanish for ten minutes. It's not a weird religious thing you need a secret handshake to attempt. Meditation, put very simply, is the act of training your attention. You sit quietly, you pick something to focus on - usually your own breathing - and you practice noticing when your mind has drifted off. That's it. The entire skill of meditation is built on that single, unglamorous sentence.

So now let's set you up for your first session. You don't need any special gear.
