The Purple Guide to Learning Kickboxing in 10 Days

A no-nonsense, day-by-day starter plan to feel what kickboxing really is - and decide if it's for you

by Alumigogo Books

Chapter 1: First Day

Tonight, you are going to do something you have probably never done before. You are going to stand in an empty space in your living room, barefoot or in socks, and you are going to throw a punch at the air. That is it. That is the whole first session. There is no punching bag, no opponent, no fancy equipment, and no one watching except maybe your cat. The goal for day one is not to learn a martial art. The goal is to feel what it is like to move your body in a way that is completely unfamiliar, and to end the session with one small, real win.

Before you start, let's talk about the space. You need about six feet by six feet of clear floor. That means moving the coffee table, pushing the chairs aside, or going to a room that doesn't have furniture in it. If your floor is hardwood or tile, wear socks or stand on a yoga mat or a towel, because bare feet on a dusty floor can slip. If you have carpet, bare feet are fine. Just make sure there is nothing sharp within arm's reach. You are going to be clumsy, and you do not want to accidentally punch a lamp or kick a side table.

Now, stand up. Yes, right now, if you are reading this on a chair, stand up. I want you to get a feel for your own body before we do
