Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You are about to sit in a kayak for the first time, and I want you to know what is about to happen so nothing surprises you. Kayaking looks calm and effortless from the shore, but the first time you actually sit in one of these boats, it feels a little strange. The seat is low, the boat is narrow, and the paddle is much longer than you expect. None of that means you are doing it wrong. It means you are exactly where every kayaker was on their first day.
Here is the plan for today: you are going to get into a kayak, sit in it, learn to hold the paddle correctly, and take a few short paddles on very calm water. That is it. By the end of today, you will have launched from shore, floated on the water, and made the boat move under your power for a few minutes. That is a real win, and it is enough for day one.
First, let's talk about where you are doing this. Do not pick a windy day and do not pick a big open lake with motorboats whizzing past. Today is about feeling the boat move, not testing your courage. Look for a small pond, a calm marina, a slow river with almost no current, or the protected bay corner of a larger lake. The water should be flat enough that you do not see whitecaps—those little foamy
