The Purple Guide to Learning Journaling in 10 Days

A 10-day starter plan to build a simple, sustainable journaling habit — and decide if it's for you

by Alumigogo Books

Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. You are here because you have thought about writing in a journal, maybe bought a notebook that is still empty on a shelf, or you are just curious what the fuss is about. This is not a book about becoming a writer or a "mindful guru." It is a ten-day test drive. You will write for a few minutes each day, in a simple way, and at the end you will have an honest answer to the question: do I like this or not?

Let's start with what you actually need for today. Not a fancy leather-bound journal. Not a special pen that cost more than your lunch. Just something to write on and something to write with. A spiral notebook from a drugstore works fine. A ballpoint pen works fine. If you have a computer or a phone and you'd rather type, that works too. There is no wrong way to do this. The only requirement is that you can write for five minutes without getting distracted by notifications or other tabs. Do not worry about the perfect tool. That is a later problem, and honestly, the perfect tool doesn't exist.

Now, here is what your first session actually looks like. Find a time when you will not be interrupted for about ten minutes total. Not an hour. Ten minutes. Maybe this is right after you wake up, before you look at your phone. Maybe it's during your lunch break. Maybe it's before bed.
