Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. This is the day you get your hands into hair, touch it, separate it, and attempt something that will feel clumsy, slow, and maybe even a little ridiculous. That is exactly what should happen. There is no way to learn braiding without feeling clumsy first. The goal today is not to produce a neat braid. The goal is to give you a real taste of what the physical skill involves and to end the day with one small, honest win.
Before you touch any hair, let’s talk about where you are and what you’ll need within arm’s reach. Choose a spot where you can sit comfortably for about twenty to thirty minutes without having to hunch over. A kitchen table or a desk is better than a sofa. You need a hard surface and you need good light. Natural daylight is fine, but a desk lamp pointing at your work area is even better. You’ll be looking at the underside of hair strands, at the way three sections overlap, and you want to see exactly where your fingers are.
For today’s session, you only need three things: a wide-tooth comb, a single elastic hair tie, and a small spray bottle filled with water, if your hair is on the drier side. That’s it.
