Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You're here because you're curious about collage art, and that's genuinely all you need to start. You don't need a degree, you don't need a studio, and you definitely don't need to have made any art since elementary school. Today is about getting your hands into the actual material and proving to yourself that making something is within reach.
Before you do anything else, take a breath. You might be feeling a jumble of things right now: excitement, intimidation, or a nagging voice telling you that you're not creative enough for this. That voice is a liar, but also, we're not trying to prove anything grand today. We're going to make one small, honest piece of collage art, and we're going to do it in under an hour.
Here's what you need to gather. Go find any old magazine - a fashion magazine, a National Geographic, a junk mail catalog with pictures in it, anything with glossy or even matte pages. If you don't have a magazine, a newspaper with good photos, old greeting cards, or a book with pictures you don't mind cutting up will work. Next, grab a pair of scissors. They need to be sharp enough to cut paper cleanly, but they don't need to be fancy; regular household scissors are fine for today.
