Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to day one. Take a breath, because I need to tell you something right now that most cocktail books won't: you are not going to look like a professional bartender today, and that is completely fine. Today is about getting your hands on some ice, some alcohol, and a glass, and finishing the hour with a drink that tastes genuinely good. That's your only job. If you make one honest, tasty drink and feel like you understand what happens in a glass, we've done our job and you've done yours.

Let's talk about what cocktail mixology actually is before you start, because it's a lot less mysterious than it sounds. A cocktail is a drink that combines three things: a base spirit (like gin, whiskey, or rum), something to modify it (like vermouth, citrus juice, or soda), and something that balances it out, which is usually sweetness. That's it. A classic margarita is spirit, lime juice (the sour), and orange liqueur (the sweet). A gin and tonic is spirit, tonic water, and lime. The entire art of mixology, for a beginner, is learning how to handle those three components so they come together smoothly.

For your first session, you are going to use two ingredients. Just two. And you're going to make what is arguably the most foolproof drink in the world: a whiskey highball. You don't need a shaker, you don't need a jigger, and you don't even need to have any specific brand
