Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to day one. Forget everything you've seen in music videos or at a friend's wedding dance floor. This is not about being sexy. It's not about looking perfect. It's about getting to know your own hips. By the end of today's session, you will have successfully performed a basic hip slide, which is the building block for almost every other move you'll ever learn. That's the win. Let's get you there.

First, let's talk about your environment. You don't need a dance studio. You don't need a yoga mat. You need a small area of floor, about two by two meters, where you won't kick a coffee table or trip over a pet. A living room with the rug pushed back is ideal. A kitchen with non-slip shoes is fine. Actually, for your very first time, I recommend you do this either barefoot or in socks with a good grip. You'll want to feel the floor, and you'll need to pivot on the balls of your feet, so you definitely don't want to be in thick, grippy sneakers.

Now, what are you wearing? This is one of the biggest mental blocks for beginners, so let's clear it up immediately. You do not need a jeweled belt, a coin-covered bra, or a flowing skirt.
