Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have been given bad advice. Not wrong in an obvious way, but wrong in a way that feels right, which is far more dangerous. You have heard all of it: "Just be yourself." "Networking is about building genuine relationships." "The key is to be interested, not interesting." These are pleasant sentiments, but as a strategy, they are nearly useless. They tell you how to feel, not what to do. And so you go through the motions. You attend the happy hours. You send the occasional "How are you?" email. You connect on LinkedIn and feel a small sense of accomplishment.

Then, when you need something - a reference, an introduction, a piece of critical advice - you find that the relationship has dried up. The initial rapport you felt over coffee has rotted from disuse. You are left with an awkward, cold email to a near-stranger, asking for a favor. The interaction is transactional, the response is slow (if it comes at all), and you feel like a user. You resolve to be better at "staying in touch," but you do not have a system for it.
