Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You have a trading account, a few books on your shelf with dog-eared pages about value investing, and enough willpower to have started saving for retirement more than once. Yet, the results are not there. Not because you are lazy, and not because you lack information. In fact, you probably suffer from the opposite: information overload. You read the news, you listen to the earnings calls, you watch the analysts on television with their confident charts. But when it comes to making the actual decision to buy, hold, or sell, something else takes over. A gut feeling. A sense of urgency. A familiar pang of fear when the line on your portfolio goes red.
The common narrative is that this is a discipline problem. The popular advice tells you to be patient, to ignore the noise, to keep a stiff upper lip and trust the process. This is the "just be disciplined" school of thought. It is not wrong, exactly, but it is useless. Telling a person who is drowning in uncertainty to "stay disciplined" is like telling a new pilot to "just keep the plane level" during a thunderstorm without ever teaching them how to read the instruments or manage the controls.
