You have read the articles. You have tried the "quality time" on the weekends. You have scrolled past the quotes about how "the best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother." And you have gone to bed on Sunday night with the same knot in your stomach: you are not the father you thought you would be. You are not the father you want to be. You are just a man, tired, and doing his best.
And the reason why, the reason why the advice never lands, is not because you are a failure. It is because the advice is bad. It is incomplete. It is either so vague it is meaningless, or so prescriptive it is impossible to follow.
The Two Great Failures of Fatherhood Advice
Let's be precise. On one side you have the platitude gurus. They tell you to "be present." They tell you to "show up." These are not instructions. They are memes. If someone on YouTube tells you to "show up" and your kid is having a tantrum on the floor of the supermarket, what is the specific behavior you are supposed to execute? You can feel the love in the sentiment, but you cannot action the thought. It gives you a destination without a map. It makes you feel guilty for not being there, but it doesn't tell you how to get there.
