Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have heard all the cliches by now. "Time heals all wounds." "You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else." "It takes half the length of the marriage to get over it." Maybe your friends have offered them with good intentions. A therapist might have even suggested you "sit with the grief" to process it.

And you have probably tried. You have read the blog posts about self-care. You have forced yourself to go for walks. You have tried journaling your feelings and deleting your ex's number. You have even tried to date, thinking maybe a new person will overshadow the old one. And none of it has worked in any lasting way. In fact, you might feel worse than you did in week one. You are more confused, more depleted, and you have begun to suspect there is something uniquely and fundamentally wrong with you.

There is not. The problem is not you. The problem is the advice you have been given. It is structurally incorrect.

Let's be precise about this. The common wisdom on divorce recovery falls into two broad categories, and both have a fatal flaw.
