Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You are at a work event, or a friend's birthday, or a backyard barbecue. You are holding a drink, standing on the edge of the room, and you have been talking to the same person for the last twenty minutes about the traffic, the weather, and how "busy" everyone is. You feel a familiar, dull panic. You see a person you actually want to meet, but you do not know how to get over to them without it being weird. Or worse, you have already done it. You walked up, introduced yourself, and asked the standard questions. And the conversation died. It was not a crash, it was a slow, agonizing fade to silence. You both looked at your shoes, then your drinks, and then muttered something about needing to find the restroom.
