Anatomy and Function: The Mechanical Heart of the Zipper

A zipper is, at its core, a simple machine. It is a pair of interlocking teeth, called a chain, that are held together or pulled apart by a single sliding mechanism. While the consumer sees a finished product, a professional understands the assembly and the critical role each component plays in its function and failure. To master this device, you must first learn its vocabulary.

The entire system is built around two strips of textile called tape. This is the woven fabric that is sewn into your garment or product. It is not inert background material; its strength, weave, and material determine how well the zipper handles stress, how it drapes on a garment, and how it reacts to washing. On or alongside the tape, you will find the chain, which is the interlocking series of individual elements. These elements have several names depending on the type of zipper. On a metal zipper, they are called teeth. On a molded or coil zipper, they are often called scoops or elements.

Sitting on top of the chain is the slider, the most complex and mechanically demanding part of the system. The slider is a machined or cast piece of metal, usually brass, nickel, or a zinc alloy.
