Chapter 1: Understanding Yarn

Yarn is spun fiber—a structural form created by twisting or plying individual fibers together. That simple description, though technically accurate, obscures what actually matters: yarn is a material with measurable physical properties that determine what you can make, how long it will last, how it will feel, how much it will cost, and whether your project will succeed or fail.

Most people encounter yarn in craft contexts and think of it primarily as a color and weight—thicker yarn for blankets, thinner yarn for socks, whatever color matches the project vision. This is how yarn is typically marketed: through color cards and weight categories. But this approach leaves out the crucial part. A yarn's fiber content, twist structure, elasticity, and durability are not secondary details. They are the foundation of whether that yarn will work for your purpose.

Consider a concrete example. Suppose you are knitting socks. Two yarns might both be labeled "fingering weight" (a standard weight category) and come in the same gray color. One is 75% wool, 25% nylon; the other is 100% acrylic. They feel different to your hands immediately, but more importantly, they will perform differently. The wool-nylon blend will have natural elasticity, will absorb sweat from your feet, will wear slowly but consistently, and will last two to three years of regular use before the heel wears through.
