Work safety protective gear is engineered equipment designed to reduce your exposure to a hazard. That sentence is simple, but what follows is not. A hard hat and a respirator do fundamentally different things; a pair of cut-resistant gloves and a pair of leather work gloves look similar but perform under completely different conditions; and whether a particular piece of gear will actually protect you depends on fit, maintenance, and whether it matches your specific hazard. This chapter explains what protective gear is, how it works, and why treating it as a commodity—or worse, a checkbox—leaves you and your team exposed.

What Protective Gear Does

Protective gear works in three ways: it can block or deflect a hazard, it can absorb or dissipate energy, or it can filter or neutralize a substance before it reaches you. A hard hat blocks falling objects by deflecting them or absorbing impact energy. A respirator filters particles or chemicals from the air you breathe. Cut-resistant gloves block sharp edges from reaching your skin. Hearing protection absorbs sound energy before it reaches your ear drum. Safety glasses block flying debris from your eyes. A harness and lanyard in fall protection absorb the energy of a fall and distribute the force across your body in a way that doesn't snap your neck.

The key point: gear only protects against the specific hazards it was designed for. A dust mask does nothing for toxic gas; a hard hat does nothing
