Chapter 1: Understanding Work Platforms
A work platform is a temporary elevated structure designed to hold workers and materials safely while they perform tasks that require access above ground level. Unlike a ladder—which is primarily a means of vertical access—or scaffolding—which is a large, multi-story framework typically erected for facade work or complex projects—a work platform is a localized, relatively compact structure that provides a stable horizontal working surface at a specific height for a defined task and duration.
The distinction matters because it shapes how the structure is designed, certified, installed, and used. A work platform's sole job is to provide a stable place to stand and work. It is not primarily a climbing device or a temporary building framework. This clarity shapes everything about it: its engineering assumptions, its capacity ratings, its inspection requirements, and the mistakes that make it dangerous.
What a Work Platform Actually Is
Physically, a work platform consists of a deck (the surface workers stand on), a frame (the structure that holds the deck), and typically a system for reaching that height and preventing falls. The deck is usually steel, aluminum, or wood-composite, somewhere between 6 feet and 12 feet wide, and 4 feet to 10 feet deep. The frame connects the deck to supports—which may be posts, a boom, cables, or the structure of the building itself.
What makes a work platform a platform—rather than just a deck—is that it is purpose-built to support workers at height with attention to fall prevention, load
