Every flute, clarinet, saxophone, and oboe has one thing in common: the owner's fingerprints. The oil and salt in human skin are benign for a few hours, but left to set, they begin a chemical conversation with the metal parts of the instrument. On a silver-plated flute, this manifests as a dull haze that turns to dark brown and then black pitting. On a lacquered brass saxophone, it can seep through microscopic scratches in the lacquer to corrode the brass underneath. This is the fundamental problem that a woodwind polishing cloth is designed to solve. It is not a luxury accessory; it is a chemical and mechanical control tool.
To understand this simple piece of fabric, you must first understand what it is up against. An instrument does not tarnish from being exposed to air. It tarnishes from being exposed to sulfur compounds and chlorides that are always present in the environment. The sulfur comes from many ordinary sources: eggs, certain papers, asphalt, and of course, the air pollution emitted by combustion engines. When silver molecules at the surface of an instrument come into contact with these airborne particles, they react to form silver sulfide. This is the black layer you see. On lacquered instruments, the concern is different. The lacquer is a polymer that protects the underlying brass.
