The Role of the Access Point
A wireless access point (AP) is a network device that bridges wired and wireless traffic. It takes Ethernet frames from a cable and converts them into radio signals, and it does the reverse: it listens for radio signals from client devices (laptops, phones, printers, and IoT sensors) and translates them back into Ethernet frames for the wired network. This is its only job. It does not route between subnets, assign IP addresses, or filter internet traffic. Those tasks belong to a router, firewall, or switch further up the network chain. When people say "the Wi-Fi is down," they often mean the router is down, or the internet connection is down, and the APs are actually working fine. Understanding this division of labor is the first practical step to troubleshooting any wireless complaint.
To be concrete, consider a typical small office with a single internet line, a router that also acts as a firewall and DHCP server, a switch, and a few APs mounted on the ceiling. When you open a webpage on your laptop, the path is: laptop radio -> AP radio -> Ethernet cable -> switch -> router -> modem -> internet. The reply travels the same path in reverse.
