Understanding wine begins with understanding that basic chemistry. What makes wine matter as a commodity—not as a status symbol, but as a product you can evaluate, purchase, store, and serve with confidence—is that every bottle is the result of measurable decisions that produce measurable results. Those decisions happen in the vineyard (which grape variety, when to harvest), in the winery (fermentation temperature, yeast strain, oak aging duration), and in the bottle (cork quality, storage conditions). None of these are mysterious or subjective. All of them affect what you experience when you open the bottle.

What Wine Actually Contains

A bottle of finished wine contains alcohol (typically 9 to 16 percent by volume), acid (measured in grams per liter, typically 4 to 9), tannins (compounds that create astringency, primarily from grape skins and oak), residual sugar (unfermented grape sugars, typically zero to 100+ grams per liter depending on style), water, and trace compounds from fermentation and aging. Those five categories—alcohol, acid, tannin, residual sugar, and minor compounds—determine how a wine tastes, how it ages, and whether it will work for a particular situation.
