A windsurfing board is a composite structure designed to float under human weight while remaining stiff enough to transmit control inputs and powerful enough to resist the torque generated by a sail. Unlike a surfboard, which relies on buoyancy and wave energy, a windsurfing board must be rigid enough to support a mast and boom without flex that would waste wind energy, yet responsive enough that a rider can feel and control the board's angle relative to the wind. That paradox—stiff but responsive—shapes every part of the system.
The core of a modern windsurfing board is typically expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam or polyurethane foam encased in fiberglass cloth and epoxy or polyester resin. The foam provides buoyancy and absorbs impact; the resin-saturated fiberglass provides rigidity and water resistance. But this sandwich is not a static structure. Every time the board hits water chop, every time the rider shifts weight, every time the sail pulls, the foam and fiberglass experience compression, tension, and shear forces. Over time, repeated flexing can cause the
