Chapter 1: Understanding Windsurfing Board Masts
A windsurfing board mast is a hollow tube, typically 380 to 520 centimeters long and 22 to 35 millimeters in diameter, designed to hold a sail upright while absorbing the dynamic forces created by wind pressure, sail angle, and the sailor's weight and movement. It connects the sail to the board via a boom, a mast foot assembly, and the sailor's hands. Unlike a rigid pole, a mast must flex—bend and recover under load—in a controlled, predictable way. This combination of stiffness and flex, maintained across saltwater exposure and repeated load cycles, defines what makes a good mast.
To understand why masts matter, start with what happens when wind fills a sail. The sail develops pressure on its front (windward) side and lower pressure on the back (leeward) side. This pressure differential pushes the sail away from the wind, but the sail is only as straight and effective as the mast holding it. If the mast is too stiff—too rigid—it resists the sail's natural shape, wastes energy, and transmits shock loads back to your arms and the board. If the mast is too soft—too flexible—the sail collapses forward, loses shape, and gives you poor control. A properly designed mast finds the balance: it flexes enough to let the sail breathe and absorb sudden gusts, but holds its curve well enough that the sail stays efficient across a range of wind speeds and angles.
In practice, mast flex is not uniform along the mast's length.
