A wind wheel or spinner is a kinetic sculpture—a stationary object with moving parts—that converts wind energy into visible rotational motion. The device consists of a central vertical post or pole, mounted to the ground or a support structure; a bearing mechanism at the top; and an assembly of blades, cups, or shaped elements arranged to catch the wind. As wind passes over or through these elements, it creates aerodynamic force that causes the entire blade assembly to rotate around the central axis. This rotation is the defining feature: unlike a weather vane or flag that pivots to show wind direction, a spinner rotates continuously as long as wind speed exceeds a minimum threshold.
The physics underlying this motion are straightforward but important to understand. Wind exerts pressure on any surface exposed to it; the shape, angle, and arrangement of a spinner's blades determine how effectively that pressure translates into rotational force.
