The term "webcam" originated in the 1990s when researchers and hobbyists first attached small cameras to computers and streamed the feed over the internet—the most famous example being a coffee pot at Cambridge University that scientists monitored remotely. That novelty use case has evolved into critical infrastructure. Today, webcams are embedded in laptops, mounted on office walls, installed in vehicles, bolted to building exteriors for security, and integrated into specialized hardware for medical imaging, industrial inspection, and content production. The technology is no longer optional for remote work, live streaming, or surveillance—it's foundational.

How a Webcam Captures Video

At the core of every webcam is a sensor—a semiconductor chip that converts light into electrical signals. There are two common types: CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) and CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor). For consumer and professional webcams, CMOS sensors dominate because they consume less power, generate less heat, and are cheaper to manufacture at scale.
