A weather forecaster or station is a collection of sensors that measure atmospheric conditions in a specific location, log or transmit that data, and present it in a form a person or system can use to make a decision. It is not a predictor—it does not forecast what will happen tomorrow. Instead, it measures what is happening right now: temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, barometric pressure, rainfall, solar radiation, or UV index, depending on what sensors are installed. Those measurements become the foundation for forecasting, planning, and operational decisions across agriculture, construction, emergency management, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, and research.

The distinction matters because it determines what to expect from the equipment. A weather station answers the question "What is the atmospheric condition at this location right now?" A weather forecaster—software or a professional service—uses data from stations (along with other inputs) to answer "What will atmospheric conditions be in the next six hours, 24 hours, or seven days?" This handbook addresses the station and forecaster hardware itself, the instrument you own, install, and maintain. Understanding that boundary prevents a common mistake: assuming a weather station will reliably predict tomorrow's weather. It will not.
