Watering and irrigation are fundamentally about moving water from a source—a well, a municipal line, a pond, a storage tank—to plants and soil in a controlled way. That control is the difference between a system and a random hose. A system delivers a specific amount of water, to a specific location, at a specific time, using pressure and gravity to overcome the friction and distance between source and target. When that control fails, water ends up in the wrong place, costs rise, plants suffer, and maintenance becomes reactive instead of preventive.

To understand what irrigation does, start with what plants need and what soil does with water. Plants require water—it dissolves nutrients in the soil, moves those nutrients into the roots, and keeps cells turgid so the plant can support its own weight and regulate temperature through transpiration. But soil does not uniformly hold or release water. Sandy soil drains quickly; clay soil holds water but drains slowly and compacts easily; loam—a mixture of sand, silt, and clay—retains moderate amounts of water and drains reasonably well. A plant's roots can only absorb water that is actually present in the soil around them. If you flood a plant once a week, the water drains away in sandy soil within hours, and the plant experiences stress for days until the next watering. If you apply the same amount to clay soil, it may remain waterlogged for a week, suffocating roots and promoting fungal disease. Irrigation exists
