Chapter 1: Understanding Watercraft

Watercraft—boats, yachts, barges, ferries, and any other vessel designed to float and move through water—are machines. Like all machines, they have core components, operate according to physical laws, and succeed or fail based on how well their design matches their intended purpose. Understanding watercraft means understanding these fundamentals: what keeps a boat afloat, what makes it move, and how those two things together determine cost, performance, safety, and longevity.

The first and most basic truth is this: a watercraft floats because its total weight is distributed over enough volume to displace a mass of water equal to that weight. This is Archimedes' principle, and it has never changed. A 50-ton fishing boat floats the same way a 50-ton barge does—by displacing 50 tons of water. The shape and material of the hull determine how efficiently that displacement happens, but the principle is immutable. If a boat sinks, it is because something has reduced its ability to displace water (a hull breach, overloading, or structural failure), not because the principle failed.

This matters practically because it means that every boat has weight limits, that loading it beyond its capacity is not a matter of opinion but of physics, and that understanding a boat's displacement and draft—how deep it sits in the water—tells you something real about where it can operate safely.
