Chapter 1: Understanding Watercraft Propellers

A watercraft propeller is a rotating airfoil. That is the first thing to understand if you want to take control of your boat's performance rather than merely accepting what came with it. Like a wing, it produces lift by accelerating a mass of fluid backward, and the equal and opposite reaction to that acceleration is the forward thrust that pushes your boat through the water. The shape of the blade, the angle at which it is set, and the material it is made from all determine how efficiently your engine's power becomes useful forward motion. Get the combination right, and your boat will feel responsive, cruise quietly at the sweet spot of its power curve, and burn fuel in the way the engine designer intended. Get it wrong, and you will be asking the engine for more throttle to achieve less speed, or worse, inducing vibration that slowly destroys your drivetrain components.

To work with propellers at a professional level, you need to move beyond the mental model that a prop is just a chunk of metal with blades. Every significant performance dimension of your vessel's drivetrain is mediated through this component. A 24-foot center console boat with a 250-horsepower outboard, running at 5800 RPM at wide-open throttle, can have a top speed that varies by as much as 7 to 10 percent purely as a function of the propeller chosen, assuming the same diameter and pitch.
