Chapter 1: Understanding Watercraft Polishes
A watercraft polish is not a single substance with a single job. It is a carefully balanced mixture of abrasives, oils, solvents, and protectants, and its only real purpose is to remove a tiny, controlled amount of a boat's outer surface. That may sound simple, but it is also why most polish jobs go wrong. People use too much abrasive, or the wrong one, or they use a polish when the finish needs a compound, or they apply a wax over a surface that wasn't properly prepped. The result is a finish that looks worse than when they started, or looks good for a week and then fails. To use these products well, you need to understand what each component in the bottle is doing, what it is doing to the surface, and what it cannot do.
Consider the two most common surfaces you will be working on: gelcoat and marine-grade paint. Gelcoat is a thick, pigmented polyester or epoxy resin layer, typically 0.5 to 0.75 millimeters thick, molded as the outer skin of a fiberglass hull. It is porous, and over time it oxidizes. Ultraviolet light breaks the chemical bonds in the resin, causing a chalky, dull, whitish layer to form on the surface. Polish does not rejuvenate this layer; it removes it.
